Mike Tyson and Lennox Lewis faced each other in an exhilarating heavyweight battle back in 2002.
With both men in the final chapters of their respective careers, their long-awaited showdown finally took place on June 8 2002 at The Pyramid in Memphis, Tennessee. The fight itself had been speculated for a number of years before they finally locked horns, with Lewis putting his WBC and IBF heavyweight titles at stake against ‘Iron’ Mike.
Although the contest started in exactly the way it was expected to, with both fighters trading heavy shots within the opening few rounds. It didn’t take long for ‘The Lion’ to assume control of the contest as Tyson began to fade in the mid-rounds.
Lewis floored ‘Iron’ Mike twice in the eighth round before he was counted out by the referee, putting an end to proceedings in one of heavyweight boxing’s most powerful rivalries. Many argue that Tyson was well past his dangerous prime at the time of the fight and it may have went differently years earlier, though Lewis does not buy it.
One fighter who has history with both Tyson and Lewis is former world heavyweight title challenger Tyrell Biggs, who fell short in fights against both men throughout his tenure.
In a round of ‘Best I Faced’ with the Ring Magazine, Biggs made no mistake in naming ‘Iron’ Mike as the best fighter he ever faced, backing the former undisputed heavyweight champion against any fighter during his formidable best.
“I’d have to go with Tyson. Tyson was in a different mindset in the 80s. No question.”
The career of Tyson was filled with many ups and downs both inside and outside of the ring, the latter of which certainly disrupting his progress as an athlete. He returned to the ring last year for one last dance against Jake Paul.
