'I Don't Feel!' Liam Coen Reveals Thoughts on Leaving Baker Mayfield

For the third year in a row, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers will have a brand new offensive coordinator and play-caller on the sideline.

In a controversial move, former Buccaneers offensive mind Liam Coen bolted for the head coaching job for the Jacksonville Jaguars. That, itself, isn't a big deal.

'I Don't Feel!' Liam Coen Reveals Thoughts on Leaving Baker Mayfield

It happened the year prior when Dave Canales left to become the head coach of the Carolina Panthers.

But Coen's departure was different. He first turned down the job, accepted a pay raise with the Bucs, then ghosted his employer in Tampa Bay while traveling in secret to Jacksonville to accept the job after then-general manager Trent Baalke was fired.

It was considered by Tampa Bay fans to be a sketchy move out of town, and it could've affected Coen's relationship with Bucs players and staff - which it might have done, regardless of the kind words those at One Bucs Place still use regarding Coen.

Coen left a fruitful relationship behind with quarterback Baker Mayfield, and the new Jags coach addressed that on a recent episode of Pardon My Take.

"I don't feel, you know, it's not bad. It's unfortunate in ways, because of the competitor, because of the person that he is. You know, we got really close," Coen said. "Obviously, we worked together in LA those last kind of, like five or six weeks. He was paramount, kind of, in my evolution to coming to Tampa, like getting there."

Jacksonville hopes instruction from Coen can do for Trevor Lawrence what it did for Mayfield. Mayfield posted his second straight career season in 2024 under Coen, posting 4,500 yards and 41 touchdown passes with a 71.4 completion percentage.

Coen knows Mayfield is still getting better.

"He's in a place where he's continuing to ascend like he's just doing this right now," Coen said of Mayfield. "He's got a ton of confidence. He's at a place where a lot of people love him and believe in him, and I think that's only going to continue."

Coen and the Jags would love to have those numbers for Lawrence.
