The Philadelphia Eagles were one of the most disappointing teams in the NFL during the 2023 season. They started the season 10-1, building off the momentum of their NFC Championship from the 2022 season as quarterback Jalen Hurts looked like an MVP candidate.
But, they ran out of steam after that and went all the way off the rails. They lost five out of six games to end the regular season and lose the NFC East title. In the playoffs, they were defeated handily by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
A lot of the focus for their struggles was on the defensive side of the ball, where they ranked near the bottom of the league. But, their offense was abysmal as well. Continuity and chemistry were absent as their offense was described as pee-wee level by some.
This offseason, the Philadelphia Eagles made a concerted effort to change that. They brought in Kellen Moore to be the offensive coordinator and upgraded the weapons around Jalen Hurts. Running back Saquon Barkley was signed in free agency. Any issues with wide receiver A.J. Brown were smoothed over with a lucrative contract extension.
Heading into the 2024 season, you can expect a new-look offense in Philadelphia. Hurts recently commented on how different things are with Moore running the show.
“You get to a point where you feel, I’m going to be comfortable with this, I like this, that time comes when you can rep it, rep it, rep it later on, but right now it’s been a lot of new inventory in — the majority of it, probably 95% of it being new — and so it’s just been that process, and it’s been a fun process because you get to see what works for other people,” Jalen Hurts said.
“I think the goal coming in was to learn Kellen’s offense and to master it, and I think that’s been a process, and by the end of it, I want it to be mine and have it in my own way.”
What the Philadelphia Eagles will be running in 2024 has been described as a hybrid scheme. Parts of what head coach Nick Sirianni ran in the past has been combined with what Moore brings to the table.
It will be interesting to see what level Moore can bring Jalen Hurts and the Eagles to. There were core issues with the team last season, sometimes over-reliant on Brown and DeVonta Smith as the only pass-catching options alongside tight end Dallas Goedert.
Not much depth was added at wide receiver, but a change in scheme could really help get the team back on track. Barkley is an excellent pass catcher out of the backfield and should be incorporated a ton by Moore as well.
