The Philadelphia Eagles are moving on from veteran cornerback Darius Slay after five seasons, and his wife, Jennifer, is feeling emotional.
"Real tears," Jennifer posted on X shortly after ESPN's Adam Schefter made the announcement.
Slay, 34, was originally drafted by the Detroit Lions in 2013. After seven seasons in Detroit, Slay was traded to Philly in 2020. The Eagles welcomed Slay and his family with open arms and immediately signed him to a three-year, $20 million extension.
The Eagles' decision to release Slay was strictly a business decision to help create more salary cap space. Per Schefter, the Eagles will save $4.3 million against the cap in 2025. They will also save $17.8 million for 2026. This will help the Eagles sign players at the positions that they need during the March NFL free agency period.
There is, however, a chance that the Eagles could bring Slay back on a new deal if there was mutual interest and he agreed to take a pay cut.
Wherever Slay ends up next will likely be his final destination before he throws in the towel for good.
Slay has repeatedly said that he would like to finish out his career in Philly, but he also recently admitted that he would be open to a return to Detroit. Now, he has the freedom to choose.
In five seasons with the Eagles, Slay appeared in 74 games and logged nine interceptions, 56 pass breakups, and three fumble recoveries. He was also a major reason why rookie cornerbacks Cooper DeJean and Quinyon Mitchell made a smooth transition from college to the professional level.
We'll see what Slay and the Eagles ultimately decide to do once NFL free agency officially kicks off on March 10.
