Joe Frazier and Larry Holmes had an argument about Mike Tyson.
In 1988, the power puncher went to war with ‘The Easton Assassin’ in a showdown between two of the best heavyweights of all time.
Tyson avenged Muhammad Ali by knocking Holmes out in a truly frightening display.
However, despite the result, ‘Iron Mike’ never impressed his rival.
Joe Frazier rated Mike Tyson higher than Larry Holmes did
In 1989, Bryant Gumbel got Muhammad Ali, Larry Holmes, Joe Frazier and Ken Norton all in the same room for an interview with HBO, in which the great Mike Tyson came up in conversation.
The host asked The Easton Assassin whether he could’ve beaten his conqueror in his prime.
He replied: “Everyone in this room here would’ve been able to beat Mike Tyson. You’d have never heard of him.”
The presenter pointed out: “Joe’s nodding his head like, ‘I ain’t sure about that’.”
‘Smokin’ explained: “I think that the young man has something that we all had ourselves. He’s there, doing his job, and he’s sacrificed.
“He’s a marksman. If you look at this young man, when he throws punches, he doesn’t throw a punch for the sake of it; there’s a cause and a reason, and believe it or not, he’s right on target.
Disagreeing with his countryman, Holmes insisted: “We all did that.”
Remaining on different pages, Frazier concluded: “Well, I think we blunt up into the shoulders and the legs, some low blows, I landed a few myself, but this guy is a marksman.”
