Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs have a chance to make history in Super Bowl LIX. If the Chiefs reign victorious in the upcoming Super Bowl, they'll be the first-ever team to three-peat in the Super Bowl era and that will definitely help Mahomes' stock when it comes to the GOAT conversation.
Right now, the unquestioned GOAT (as much as Chiefs fans hate to admit it) is Tom Brady. The future Hall of Fame quarterback won seven Super Bowls (six with the Patriots and one with the Buccaneers) and appeared in 10 total during his 23-year career. What hurts Mahomes in the whole passing Brady thing is the fact that one of those Super Bowls for Brady came against Mahomes and the Chiefs, as the Bucs blew out Kansas City in Super Bowl LV.
Brady's Patriots also beat Mahomes in the 2019 AFC Championship Game and did so at Arrowhead Stadium. It didn't help that the Patriots then went on to win the Super Bowl a few weeks later. Brady going 2-0 against Mahomes' Chiefs doesn't help Mahomes' case for trying to become the greatest player of all-time but long-time Patriots wide receiver and Brady teammate Julian Edelman said that it's possible.
When asked how Mahomes can surpass his former teammate as the GOAT, Edelman had a simple response: "He's just gotta do it for a long time."
Edelman expanded on that. "I mean, he's on pace. This is remarkable," Edelman said on The Dan Patrick Show. "If he goes out and does three in a row in a salary cap era, uh, you can't say much."
Julian Edelman says that a three-peat could be enough to cement Patrick Mahomes as the GOAT
Considering that Edelman played with Brady for a decade and won three Super Bowls with Brady as his quarterback, that's quite the comment from the long-time Patriots wide receiver. Edelman even mentioned how he's obviously a big Brady fan after having played with him so long but he has to give Mahomes his flowers.
Edelman did say that Brady's longetivity is what puts him above everyone else right now. He notes that Brady practically had three careers during his 23-year NFL tenure and while he didn't say this, it could also be argued that each of those careers is Hall of Fame-caliber.
Mahomes has his work cut out for him when it comes to trying to be the greatest of all-time but a three-peat would go a long way toward getting him there. For now, hopefully he's just focused on securing this three-peat and making NFL history.
