Julianne Hough on ‘Dancing With the Stars,’ Her Return to Dance and Why She’s Hungrier Than Ever

After nearly two decades in the spotlight, Julianne Hough still radiates an energy that can only be described as electric. From Emmy-winning professional dancer to seasoned judge on “Dancing with the Stars,” and now co-hosting alongside Alfonso Ribeiro, Hough has become synonymous with the show’s enduring spirit.

She shows no signs of slowing down with a Critics Choice Award nomination and an upcoming role in Maggie Gyllenhaal’s “The Bride!,” a new spin on the Frankenstein tale. In a candid conversation with Variety, Hough reflects on her evolving role in the entertainment industry, the changing tides of “DWTS,” and what drives her now more than ever.

Julianne Hough

You’re back in the Emmy conversation this year for DWTS.” What feels different this time compared to your early days on the show?

The early days were all about discovery — it was my first time on TV, and I was a pro dancer just trying to figure it all out. Now, nearly 18 years later, it feels like I’ve grown up on this show. I’m not the new kid anymore; I’m more of a big sister… or “mama,” as I like to joke. I’m here to hold space for the dancers, the celebrities, and even the audience — so they can relax and be their most authentic selves. It’s about legacy and nurturing now, not proving anything.

There was so much love online for your surprise dance last season — what inspired you to jump back in like that, and will we get more of “Dancer Jules” in Season 34?

First and foremost, I’m a dancer — I’ll always be a dancer. That surprise moment came from a performance idea that fell through with a brand, and the producers and I thought, “Why not make it spontaneous and fun?” No one knew it was happening — not even most of the cast. I hope we can do more like that. I’m a very playful person, and honestly, what’s better than being in a giant ballroom talent show with your friends?

Critics Choice just nominated you for female star of the year — how does that recognition hit differently when it’s for being you rather than playing a character?

It’s incredibly humbling. I’ve been in the public eye since I was 18, and for people to still see me, not a character, but me, and celebrate that, it means a lot. Maybe it’s because I’ve been consistent, or perhaps I’ve made a new splash. Either way, it reminds me that reinvention and joy are powerful tools. I just want to keep doing what I love while being a light for others.

With Robert Irwin announced as the first celeb for next season, what kind of energy do you think he’ll bring to the ballroom?

If he’s anything like his sister Bindi, who was an absolute gem, then he’s going to be incredible. That family is full of love and authenticity. Robert’s also in the middle of a bit of a rebrand — he’s charming, youthful, and, let’s be honest, kind of sexy! “DWTS” will be the perfect stage for him to explore this new chapter.

You and Alfonso have such great chemistry on screen. What about him behind the scenes? Would that surprise people?

People might not expect how deeply spiritual he is. Alfonso and his wife are really intentional—they meditate and reflect, and we often share those conversations. He’s this vibrant entertainer on the outside, but at his core, he’s incredibly grounded and wise. He’s the kind of man who can hold the energy of a room full of strong women, and do it gracefully.

Mount Rushmore of DWTS contestants — who’s on it?

Oh, this is so hard. I’ll go with Emmitt Smith, Apollo Anton Ohno, Iman Shumpert, and Bindi Irwin. There are so many greats I could’ve included, such as Amber Riley, Jordan Fisher, and Zendaya. The list goes on. Honestly, I wish I had a full list in front of me. It’s impossible to choose!
