When your teenager decides to share their truth with the world, having both parents on the same page makes all the difference.
Kailyn Lowry‘s 15-year-old son Elliott recently made headlines when he came out as gay during a two-part series on his mom’s “Barely Famous” podcast. Now the former “Teen Mom 2” star is revealing how Elliott’s father, Jo Rivera, responded to their son’s decision to go public with his story.
Despite their historically rocky relationship, Rivera showed nothing but support for Elliott’s brave choice to share his experience. The co-parents had what Lowry described as a productive conversation after the podcast episodes aired in early June.
“Jo and I had a really good conversation [the other day], and you know, he said that he listened to the episodes,” Lowry explained to Parade. “He was really proud of Elliott, and he said that he was happy. He was perfectly fine with the questions that were being asked.”
Elliott, who previously went by his first name Isaac before deciding his middle name felt more authentic, made the decision to come out publicly after “Teen Mom” social media pages leaked private photos of him and his boyfriend at prom online.
Finding Support From Lowry and Rivera
Some fans speculated about Rivera’s level of support based on Elliott’s careful approach to discussing their relationship during the podcast. However, Lowry clarified that her ex-husband fully backs their son’s decision to share his story.
“He understands why Elliott wanted to do [the podcast],” she told Parade. “I had the conversation with [Jo], and he came up to me, you know? And he said that he’s supportive of it.”
During the podcast episodes, Elliott addressed misconceptions about his upbringing, particularly claims that spending time primarily with his mother somehow influenced his sexuality. He made it clear that he splits his time equally between both parents under their 50/50 custody arrangement.
“I think people confuse who they’re around, the parent, they confuse it with masculinity,” Elliott explained during the podcast. “It’s not about sexuality; it’s about how masculine/feminine they are.”
Living His Truth
For Elliott, the decision to come out publicly brought a sense of peace after years of growing up in the spotlight. The teenager expressed hope that sharing his experience might help others facing similar situations.
“He was like, ‘I just want to help one person,'” Lowry shared with Parade. “‘If I could do that, then I feel like I did what I was supposed to do.'”
The experience has also allowed Elliott to live more authentically both publicly and privately. “You know, as unfortunate as it is that his boyfriend and his pictures were leaked, I think that he feels [relieved] that he can sort of live authentically, both publicly and privately now,” Lowry told the outlet.
For Lowry, her son’s happiness remains the priority. “It only affects you and who you love is who you love,” she told Elliott during the podcast episode. “At the end of the day, I’m not going to sever a relationship with my child based off of who he love or doesn’t love.”
