Kansas City Chiefs can kick the tires on ceiling-raising free agents with signings or tryouts at 2025 NFL training camp

Kansas City Chiefs players will report to training camp in St. Joseph, Missouri, in just a week.

While mostly complete, NFL rosters are ever-evolving and changing in today's game. The 53 players on the initial in-season roster will not be the same 53 players when the season comes to a close, hopefully in San Francisco for Super Bowl LX. The same goes for the 90-man offseason roster, which will continue to be tinkered with as training camp gets underway and preseason games are played. Some of that tinkering will be in response to an injury or transaction, while other moves could be made once the team understands the strengths and weaknesses of this particular roster.

With the 2025 NFL season around the corner, here's a look at several veteran free agents the team could sign or bring in for a tryout to raise the level of competition on the 90-man offseason roster.

WR Anthony Schwartz

A wide receiver with 4.25s speed, who hasn't been put in a position to succeed in the NFL? This feels like a job for Chiefs GM Brett Veach, who can’t seem to get enough of the reclamation project wide receivers. Schwartz is a type who could thrive on special teams as both a return specialist and a coverage player, challenging someone like Tyquan Thornton, who has, by all means, impressed thus far this offseason. The former third-round draft pick out of Auburn, Schwartz, is coming off an ACL injury suffered in the preseason last year. However, her would raise the bar on an already uber-talented wide receiver room in Kansas City.

DT Taven Bryan

A former first-round pick by the Jacksonville Jaguars in 2018, Bryan worked under Chiefs DL coach Joe Cullen when he was defensive coordinator for the Jags in 2021. Bryan would start 16 games for the Cleveland Browns in 2022 and recorded 26 total tackles, two tackles for loss, three sacks, and 23 total pressures. He spent the last two seasons in Indianapolis, where he appeared in 34 games, starting 13 of them. He’s never played in a playoff game before, and I tend to believe he’d raise the floor for the interior defensive line group at training camp, just for a shot to join a perennial playoff team.

OG Isaiah Wynn

A former first-round draft pick who hasn't lived up to his potential? Nothing would be more of a Brett Veach move than to bring in Wynn to join in the left guard competition. Currently, the main similarity between Mike Caliendo and Kingsley Suamataia is their lack of NFL experience. With 50 NFL games started and 56 played, he'd instantly be the player with the most NFL experience. A quad injury late in 2023 limited Wynn with the Miami Dolphins a season ago. He is a year removed from last playing left guard, but had a standout performance in nearly 400 snaps in 2023. He was called for three penalties and allowed just four pressures. He also has experience at left tackle, should the Chiefs run into a situation like they did in 2024.

CB Kendall Fuller

Another former Dolphins player, but this is one with which Kansas City has familiarity. The Chiefs, of course, acquired Fuller in the Alex Smith trade back in 2018. Fuller has mostly played the outside corner position since departing the team following the 2019 NFL season. When he was in Kansas City under Steve Spagnuolo, he played in the slot and at safety. He’s the type of player who knows the system, has a ton of versatility, and could help provide a solution at both slot and wide cornerback spots. He could help create a solution that allows Trent McDuffie to play in the slot more often and has the veteran leadership and expertise to help some young players, like Chamarri Conner, reach their full potential.
