Despite at the time being an established world champion who had defended his WBC title three times after being awarded it when Riddick Bowe refused to fight him, Lewis did take a huge upset knockout loss to Oliver McCall in 1994. Three years later in 1997 he finally got a rematch and avenged the loss to regain the vacant WBC title.
Another upset came his way in 2001 when he was knocked out by the unfancied Hasim Rahman. However, once again, Lewis avenged the loss, this time the following year.
The self-declared “pugilist specialist” retired in 2003 after stopping Vitali Klitschko on cuts in a brutal back and forth and also stopped Mike Tyson the year before in one of the most anticipated fights in heavyweight history.
Until May of this year, Lewis held the honour of being the last undisputed heavyweight champion, a feat which Oleksandr Usyk repeated when he beat the previously unbeaten Tyson Fury on points over 12 rounds.
Speaking to Mail Sport Boxing, Lewis was asked to pick who would win between prime ‘Iron’ Mike and Fury, and didn’t hesitate when picking his old foe.
“Mike Tyson.”
Former unified world champion Tyson retired in 2005 but returns to the ring in November to take on Jake Paul in a controversial but professional bout that will appear on both men’s official fight records.
