Although it seemed as if Sara Carton and Ben Mezzenga were going to be able to overcome their issues, in the end, Ben couldn't get past Sara's rejection at their wedding. So, he walked away. But despite the fact that they seemed to be struggling, it still took Sara by surprise.

The Love is Blind couple was reportedly committed to making things work, but overnight, Ben decided to end things, leaving Sara reeling.

Sara Was Blindsided When Ben Left Her

During their wedding in Love is Blind season 8, fans were sure the couple would end up together until Sara decided she couldn't say "I do" because she "always wanted a partner to be on the same wavelength" and didn't feel like Ben was that person. After that surprising twist, Ben offered her the possibility of continuing their relationship but holding off on marriage.

Sara took offense to this, saying it was disrespectful to the spirit of the show.

"With the whole entire concept of 'you walk away forever,' I was like, that's disrespectful, in a way, of what we signed up for and the whole entire point of why we're here," she said.

"Also, me saying 'no' to a marriage, why would I continue dating someone? If you're going to say 'no' to that, why even continue the relationship?"

However, despite all of this, they continued living together, but right before they were supposed to move temporarily to Nashville, Ben broke things off for good, seemingly out of the blue.

"I was shocked and I felt super duped that he just waited for the time just to drop me."

How They Moved Forward After The Infamous Wedding

Sara recently opened up in an interview with PEOPLE about what really went on after she decided not to marry Ben, and that explains why she was so surprised when Ben decided to break up.

"After the wedding day, with all my hesitations I knew, I was like, I can't say 'yes' to a marriage today," she explained. But even though she seemed reluctant at first, she quickly realized she didn't want to give up on their relationship.

"Naturally, I'm constantly hoping that things could work or maybe without all the chaos of not living a normal life right now, but later, being able to get back into our routines... I was thinking possibly it could work."

But even though they seemed to be making an effort, it wasn't enough for Ben.

"We continued to live together for a week or two after the wedding. And one day, he dropped me."

Sara said that, while it was painful to be left like that, it gave her "the most clarity of who Ben is."

"He was like, 'Oh, I thought we were broken up.' I'm like, 'That was never the discussion.' It was bizarre. It was crazy."

The discussion, according to her, was about making things work.

"We had a discussion of us being together, and that one day... he removed me from Find My Friends. I didn't hear much from him because he was out with friends drinking, which is fine. He was going to a Twins game, having fun. But I didn't hear much from him, saw that he removed me from Find My Friends, and that's when it told me the most (who he really was)."
