Mahomes' Chiefs Proactive On Day 1 Of Free Agency

The Kansas City Chiefs were proactive on Day 1 of free agency and filled two offensive holes with question marks hanging over them.

All offseason, the need for a new left tackle has been the biggest area of need, and with neither Wanya Morris nor Kingsley Suamataia showing last season that they're the answer, general manager Brett Veach wasted little time in finding a replacement.

That led him to San Francisco 49ers tackle Jaylon Moore, who signed a two-year, $30 million deal to be Patrick Mahomes' blindside protector for the next two seasons.

It is a solid move that gives peace of mind to Patrick next season, as Moore was used mainly as a backup last season. Mahomes was sacked a career-high 36 times in 2024, and the addition of Moore will hopefully help ease the consistent pressure Patrick was under last year.

So that was a good piece of business for the Chiefs, but they weren't done there.

The running back position was also one of uncertainty, with Kareem Hunt a free agent and Isiah Pacheco playing second fiddle to Hunt as he returned from injury in the second half of the year. The production wasn't up to standard.

Now, the Patrick Mahomes-led Chiefs have added Elijah Mitchell one a one-year deal, worth up to $3.5 million, who has been battling his own injury issues in the past two seasons, but as a rookie, Elijah rushed for 963 yards and five touchdowns, with his speed and elusiveness something the Chiefs will no doubt utilize next season.

It might be Day 1 of free agency, but the Chiefs have already brought in two solid contributors and have solidified two key positions for the offense.
