“Dancing With the Stars” cast members Maks Chmerkovskiy and Peta Murgatroyd have been happily married for eight years. However, in their early years of dating, Chmerkovskiy and Murgatroyd actually broke up for about a year and a half.
On the February 14 episode of the “Amy & T.J.” podcast, Chmerkovskiy shared the reason that he broke it off with his now-wife.
“That’s what men do when they’re in love. They run. I’ve acted on this primeval emotion. It was like, ‘oh my God, what is this that I’m feeling?’ My closet, all her stuff. And I’m like, it was very jarring for me to see that, you know, what used to be an empty space,” Chmerkovskiy recalled.
“I think it was the fact that I knew she was the one. And, you know, I did the thing that all stupid men do is we’re just like… yeah, cold feet. And I remember it was the dumbest breakup ever,” he said.
Murgatroyd recalled that time in her life, using the word “terrible” to describe it.
Maks Chmerkovskiy Knew He Wanted to Get Back Together With Peta Mugatroyd Right Away
It didn’t take long for Chmerkovskiy to realize that he wanted to be with Murgatroyd. Despite the two taking time apart, Chmerkovskiy said he knew he wanted to spend his life with her.
“I was like, ‘oh my God, this is forever. Let me break up and see if it’s real’, you know? And I think that that’s what it was. And I immediately, as soon as we broke up, I wanted her back,” he said on the “Amy & T.J.” podcast.
Chmerkovskiy didn’t feel like he and Murgatroyd were apart for very long.
“You know, the year and a half … to me was so, so much less, because there was a period of time that we stayed away, but then we started bumping into each other in our friends’ houses. You know, it was, we did not want to let each other go. So we always knew,” he shared.
“When I got back together with her, for me, it was a matter of like, ‘why can’t I do right now? Why do I have to wait?’ Because I’m already back with that person. That means I’m here forever. You know, and so for me, this, you know, it was an immediate yes,” he added.
Following the release of the podcast, some DWTS fans took to Reddit to react to Chmerkovskiy’s recollection of the split.
“I feel like he’s just being real, I agree Maks can be brutally honest sometimes and it can come off bad but I would rather for him to be real than to be on camera being fake and act like him and Peta’s relationship the whole time was 10/10, 100% perfect when he’s knows it’s not then we will be on here saying ‘oh Maks is just saying that for camera , he ain’t being truthful’ etc. And couples nowadays dump each other, take breaks, and they get right back together and they still be together. So Maks wanted to end things in the past but look at him now he still with Peta, And if Maks really wanted to not be with Peta he would be single right now or in a different relationship,” one person wrote.
Many other fans felt differently about Chmerkovskiy’s comments on the matter.
“In the past when he talked about this I’m ashamed to say that I didn’t think anything of it at first, but now I’m finding all of this to be very odd. I’m referring to him dumping her AND him continuing to talk about it. What man does this to their wife??” someone else weighed in.
