The 58-year-old from New York City enjoyed an accomplished professional career of his own, which began back in 1985 just shy of his nineteenth birthday.
After winning his first 19 bouts via stoppage, with 12 of those victories coming inside the opening round, ‘Iron Mike’ captured world honours for the first time in 1986 when he blasted out WBC heavyweight champion Trevor Berbick in the 2nd round of their showdown to become the youngest heavyweight champion of all time.
Tyson added the WBA and IBF heavyweight titles to his collection in the year that followed his historic victory over Berbick with respective victories over James Smith and Tony Tucker, achieving undisputed status just one month after he turned 21-years-old.
Speaking on Pound 4 Pound with Kamaru and Henry, Tyson was asked to reveal his top five favourite fighters as of right now, naming a number of pound-for-pound stars on his list.
“[David] Benavidez, Tank [Davis], Shakur [Stevenson] when he’s got that kind of guy, like if Tank was fighting him, who else I got? Of course Bud Crawford, I like [Errol] Spence too, I still think he can come back and get his title back, I really think so, I think he’s such an underrated fighter.”
Two of the aforementioned fighters, Gervonta Davis and Shakur Stevenson, remain on a collision course for a potential showdown in the near future in what could be one of the biggest fights in the sport.
Terence Crawford is just months away from locking horns with Canelo Alvarez in their ‘mega-fight’, which takes place this September, whilst David Benavidez gears up to make the first defence of his WBC light-heavyweight title after he was elevated from Interim champion in April. As for Spence, whether he will make a return to the ring after suffering a punishing defeat to Crawford remains to be seen.
