The sport of boxing is a young man’s game! Despite that, 58-year-old Mike Tyson decided to return to the squared circle in November last year to square off against YouTuber-turned-boxer Jake Paul. The fight itself went as well as most people thought—Tyson looked like a mere shell of his former self. And the result?
After putting his all into the first round of the fight, ‘Iron’ Mike gassed out in the later rounds of the eight-round bout sanctioned by the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR). Ultimately, Paul took control and won the fight via majority decision, as the fight turned out to be a lackluster showing of experience vs. youth.
Though the bout left much to be desired, Tyson’s name and aura were enough to create buzz, as it broke multiple records. The fight saw over 72,300 fans in the audience, generating $18.1 million in gate revenue, which became the highest-grossing combat sports event outside Las Vegas. Not to mention, it attracted 108 million global viewers.
Regardless, Tyson himself had admitted the consequences of accepting the challenge at his age, noting that it took him months to recover after his fight against ‘The Problem Child.’ However, he reportedly walked away with an impressive $20 million for his efforts. Five months since the fight, many have questioned whether Tyson would consider another bout.
While appearing in an interview with Men’s Health recently, the former heavyweight champion shared a definitive answer, stating, “The only person I’m fighting now is my accountant. Other than that, I’m just living life, and I’m doing good right now.” However, Tyson is not alone in thinking that he has had enough of boxing.
Will Mike Tyson fight again after Jake Paul? His son sheds more light
Mike Tyson’s return to the ring against Jake Paul was a spectacle that left fans divided, but his son Amir believes it may have been his last. Speaking to Seconds Out, Amir said, “I think he’s done… My stepmom, she’s saying he’s done, and they’re a team. That’s husband-and-wife stuff.” Interestingly, there were calls of a “rigged” fight from fans, but Amir dismissed the rumors.
“We know it wasn’t rigged,” Amir said. “He just got tired… His gas tank after the third round was just shot.” Tyson himself admitted to serious health issues leading up to the fight, including losing half his blood and undergoing eight transfusions. While Tyson hinted at another fight, possibly against Logan Paul, the concern from his family and his own words suggest that his fight with Jake Paul may truly have been his final bow.
That said, to the relief of Mike Tyson fans, the legendary boxer won’t take another fight after Jake Paul. However, if he did take another fight, who do you think would be the best choice of opponent?
