Heavyweight boxing legend Mike Tyson squashed the ‘ring rust’ narrative with a brutal knockout after a four-year absence.
Mike Tyson returned from a four-year prison sentence to take on a 36-1 juggernaut in his boxing return in 1995. Despite the tall order Tyson faced, he passed the test with flying colors and made his opponent’s manager charge the ring to stop the fight.
Tyson and Peter McNeeley clashed at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas in August 1995. It was Tyson’s first boxing fight since June 1991, and many questioned the heavyweight legend and his camp for setting up his return fight against a top contender like McNeeley.
But Tyson’s long absence from the boxing ring didn’t slow down the knockout artist as his return lasted just under one round.
Mike Tyson’s boxing return after prison sentence lasted just 89 seconds
After an iconic staredown between Tyson and McNeeley as the referee instructed both fighters in the middle of the ring, Tyson wasted little time landing big punches. McNeeley surprised Tyson by charging forward as soon as the fight started, forcing Tyson into his corner.
But Tyson countered McNeeley’s advances by knocking down his rival with an overhand right. McNeeley shook off the punch during the referee’s count, before stepping his foot on the gas with a flurry of massive strikes.
Despite being on his back foot, Tyson withstood McNeeley’s early barrage in the first round. After a brief stoppage following a clinch, Tyson poured it on McNeeley and landed a big right uppercut for his second knockdown of the opening minutes.
As the referee began McNeeley’s 10-count, McNeeley’s manager Vinnie Vecchione entered the ring to stop his pupil from suffering from more punishment. The fight was immediately waved off as Tyson won his comeback fight by disqualification.
It was McNeeley’s second career loss which snapped a 12-fight win streak. Meanwhile, it was Tyson’s fifth consecutive victory after an upset loss to Buster Douglas in 1990.
Mike Tyson admitted he’d ‘probably’ do Evander Holyfield ear bite over again
Tyson and Holyfield, now close friends, used to be bitter enemies in 1996. Holyfield beat Tyson in both of their two ring encounters, including by disqualification after Tyson bit Holyfield’s ear in the third round.
Years after the incident, Tyson repeatedly apologized to Holyfield and has since expressed a calmer persona after hanging up the gloves. But Tyson admitted that he probably would’ve bit Holyfield again if he could go back in time.
Tyson returned to the ring at 58 years old in November against Jake Paul. He lost by unanimous decision.
McNeeley went on to fight for six more years after the Tyson fight, hanging up the gloves following a TKO loss to Mike Bernardo in June 2001. He amassed a 47-7 professional record.
