The way in which teams use their practice squad has changed drastically in recent seasons. The Minnesota Vikings chose to roster just a pair of running backs after the preseason. That had Kevin O’Connell elevating one to the active roster last week and now it’s happening again.
Myles Gaskin is back for the Minnesota Vikings, Jonah Williams joins him
The Minnesota Vikings activated Myles Gaskin from the practice squad for Week 1. He served as the third running back behind both Aaron Jones and Ty Chandler. Minnesota knocked off the New York Giants by a 28-6 tally and the game was never in doubt. That allowed for Gaskin to get a touch on offense. His lone rushing attempt went for negative three yards.
In total, Gaskin’s presence was more felt on special teams. He played just two offenses snaps while getting in for five on special teams. There were rumbling about the former Dolphins running back working as a kick returner for the Vikings. Minnesota jettisoned Kene Nwangwu when rosters were trimmed down.
Gaskin is one of two players being elevated from the practice squad for Minnesota. Last week it was safety Bobby McCain who joined him. This time around it will be defensive lineman Jonah Williams. McCain played three defensive snaps, giving up a reception, and 12 on special teams. Williams signed as a free agent with the Vikings, and is active for the first time.
The former Rams edge rusher started 16 of 17 games last year for Los Angeles. He recorded a pair of sacks and had four quarterback hits. The edge position stood out last week between Andrew Van Ginkel and Dallas Turner. Williams could rotate in to give the group a blow.
