The 'Teen Mom' star opened up about the complicated medical situation.
A former Teen Mom star has opened up about a potentially scary medical situation she is navigating with one of her sons. Kailyn Lowry, who has seven children, explained the issue during the July 21 episode of her podcast, Coffee Convos, with Lindsie Chrisley.
The situation involves Lowry's 2-year-old son Rio, whose father is Elijah Scott. Lowry also has sons Isaac, Lincoln, Lux, Creed, and Verse along with one daughter, Verse's twin, Valley.
During her latest podcast episode, Lowry talked about discovering what she thought was a small hernia on Rio last year. She thought it developed due to the swimming lessons he was taking at the time, and a doctor told her it should resolve itself.
Over the past couple of weeks, however, Lowry noticed that things had changed. "I've noticed this protruding out of his abdomen...it sort of looks discolored a little bit," Lowry said of the bump on Rio's stomach.
This time, when Lowry took Rio to a pediatrician, the doctor immediately ordered an ultrasound and said the bump was not a hernia.
The ultrasound confirmed it was not a hernia. However, Lowry shared that nobody from the doctor's office has reached out to her to explain what the lump is. She read the results in the online portal for her doctor's office, but has received no further explanation from the pediatrician.
Lowry read what the portal results indicated, which is that Rio's lump is a "reniform nodule." The results included references to "granuloma" and "complex cysts," and noted "Neoplasia cannot be excluded."
As the Cleveland Clinic notes, neoplasia refers to tumors. While neoplasms can be cancerous, the clinic indicates, many are also non-cancerous, or benign.
Lowry admitted that upon reading the results, her stomach sank. She reached out to her aunt, who is a pathologist, to try to gain insight into what the results meant.
The Teen Mom alum is still waiting for next steps to be laid out. She expects that Rio may need to be put under anesthesia for a biopsy. Per her aunt's suggestion, Lowry hopes to have doctors remove the lump entirely while Rio is under.
Lowry admitted she's feeling a lot of "mom guilt" over not having checked further into the lump last year.
However, she added, "I'm not worried. I'm not saying, like, I think it's cancer or anything. I'm just like, I've never seen anything like this."
After the podcast episode was released, Lowry shared photos via her Instagram Stories of Rio's stomach, where the lump is quite visible, along with pictures from the ultrasound.
Teen Mom fans sent prayers via the comment section of a People Instagram post about the situation.
One supporter wrote, "Good luck baby Rio."
Another commented, "Praying for Rio sending all the love to you!!!"
