New Chiefs QB Had Words For Patrick Mahomes

Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes is gearing up for his ninth NFL season, seeking his fourth Super Bowl win.

Since he began starting for the Chiefs in 2018, Mahomes has been among one of the best player in the NFL. Along with his five Super Bowl appearances and three wins, the former Texas Tech quarterback has won two MVPs and holds the NFL record for most passing, rushing and receiving yards by a quarterback in a season (5,614 in 2022).

Starting quarterback hasn't been much of a problem for Kansas City in recent memory, but Mahomes' backup has been. The Chiefs had a different backup every season since 2022, including Carson Wentz in 2024.

However, Kansas City elected to replace Wentz with former Las Vegas Raiders quarterback Gardner Minshew.

Minshew was the starter for the Raiders to begin 2024, but after suffering a broken collarbone 10 games in, his season came to an end. He finished completing 203-of-306 passes for 2,013 yards, nine touchdowns and 10 interceptions.

To begin preparation for the new season, the Chiefs held voluntary organized team activities (OTAs) over the past couple of weeks, and Minshew was in attendance.

Speaking to reporters after Thursday's session, Minshew had nothing but praise for Mahomes, via A to Z Sports' Charles Goldman.

"Seeing how he prepares," Minshew said. "Not only in the building, how does he get his body right? How does he train? He does everything at the highest of levels."

Minshew also opened up on his new role with Kansas City.

"This year, trying to help in any way that I can," he added. "If you have a good season and are a part of something special, there are things that stick with you."

Minshew will begin his Chiefs tenure on Friday, Sept. 5, taking on AFC West rival Los Angeles Chargers in Sao Paulo, Brazil.
