The Tampa Bay Buccaneers will enter 2025 with their previous two offense coordinators as head coaches in the NFL. Dave Canales is in Carolina, where he took over in 2024, and Liam Coen will be roaming the sidelines in Jacksonville.
That means Tampa Bay will entertain a new offensive coordinator for the second time in as many seasons, and their third in three years after Byron Leftwich left after the 2022 season.
Promoting from within this time, the Bucs announced Josh Grizzard as their new offensive mastermind, meaning quarterback Baker Mayfield will answer to his third OC in his third season with the team.
Grizzard spoke to the media on Thursday and made it clear that he intends to change a little as possible with the concepts that have already worked in Tampa Bay.
"The continuity of having the staff and the players together is the most important part because we can go from installing an offense to naming plays, route concepts and halfback footwork to just know now," Grizzard said.
"Once we hit the field, that’s the base level. What we did on the fundamentals we can now evolve to the next level of the teaching of coverages, of D-line technique, [etc.] – that way we can now expand the scheme, continue to add from around the league, add from college [and] continue to put pressure on the defense [as we] try to score points.”
Retaining as much as possible should be important for Grizzard and the Bucs, especially coming off a tremendous offensive season under Coen, where Tampa Bay was top five in many statistical categories.
“I’m fired up," Grizzard said. "You guys know the foundation that’s in place. We didn’t come here to go to the playoffs and lose a home game, so we’re trying to take it to the next level [and] try to bring a championship back to Tampa, and I’m fired up to be here and try to lead this unit down the road.”
