Kansas City Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes can't seem to catch a break.
In recent years, NFL Network has habitually used Mahomes' 2017 40-yard dash time in their Simulcam to illustrate how fast (or slow) players are at the combine. He ran a respectable 4.8s 40-yard dash, but it looks pretty slow compared to others who play different positions.
Mahomes requested that his 40-yard dash be retired from Simulcam ahead of the 2024 NFL Scouting Combine, but NFL Network took that as an invitation to keep using it. They pit him against DTs Braden Fiske and T'Vondre Sweat, but they also pit him against his future teammate, WR Xavier Worthy, who broke the 40-yard dash record in last year's combine.
With the 2025 NFL Scouting Combine underway, NFL Network didn't wait long to use the Mahomes 40-yard dash Simulcam. On the first day of on-field workouts, they pit him against Tennessee EDGE James Pearce.
"Happy Anniversary, Patrick Mahomes vs. the fastest guy of the day," Rich Eisen said before apologizing to Mahomes. "Look away, Patrick. Look away. Why are we doing Mahomes like this? Just because he tweeted that out."
"Partially, yeah," Daniel Jeremiah joked.
Pearce posted a 4.47-second 40-yard dash at 245 pounds, fast enough to give QBs from all 32 NFL teams nightmares. That gives him a staggering 98th percentile speed score among all edge rushers from 2000 onward, per the A to Z Sports database.
If there's one saving grace here for Mahomes, maybe this is a sign the Chiefs will target Pearce in the first round, just as they did with Worthy a year ago. The tricky part is that there are still several more days of NFL Scouting Combine drills and on-field testing, so this is undoubtedly not the end of the ribbing from NFL Network for Mahomes.
