NFL reporter says what every Eagles fan knows about team's front office

The whole NFL can acknowledge the genius of Philadelphia Eagles general manager Howie Roseman when it comes down to roster building and contract timing.

NFL reporter says what every Eagles fan knows about team's front office

The topic of discussion has never been more prevalent than the Dallas Cowboys' laughable management of edge rusher Micah Parsons and his request for a trade. Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones has yet to contact Parsons' agent to discuss a new contract, and this has created a rift throughout the offseason.

That's part of the reason The Athletic's Dianna Russini has shared some insight into three NFL teams that have been the best at handling contracts.

"Across the league, when the conversation turns to teams that consistently stay ahead of the curve on contracts, a few franchises are mentioned over and over again:

Philadelphia, Houston, and Los Angeles (Rams)"

What makes Roseman so good at contracts

For Roseman, it's about three key factors when building a team: he wants to build through the draft, play them early, and make a decision early on whether to retain them or let them go. He's been great about getting rookies' contracts signed early with the exception being Andrew Mukuba this year, but that was because of circumstances beyond Roseman's control.

Roseman is also good about moving on from a player if necessary. A perfect example is just this offseason with Bryce Huff. Instead of dragging it out to training camp with him not happy with his role on the team, Roseman traded him to the San Francisco 49ers early in OTAs to eliminate any potential distractions.

Another beautiful thing is Roseman will take care of his players, whom he sees as cornerstone pieces to the roster. Saquon Barkley and Zack Baun just signed contracts last offseason, but Roseman rewarded Barkley with a contract extension, and Baun got a larger re-signed deal. Even Cam Jurgens was rewarded after just one full season as the starter because of how important he is to the team.

This is where the Cowboys appear to always screw up badly. Yes, they got deals done with CeeDee Lamb and Dak Prescott, but at what cost? Lamb was not happy with how long that deal stretched out, and Prescott got overpaid when Jones could have signed him for much less a year earlier.

What makes Roseman the best at his job is that he takes care of all his players, whether it's offering them new deals or giving them enough time to find another home by not dragging out the process. It's why the Eagles have been to three Super Bowls in the last 25 years, while the Cowboys haven't even been to the NFC Conference title game since the 1990s.
