The New York Rangers were the NHL's biggest disappointment in 2024/25, and with Peter Laviolette potentially on the way out, we know their ideal replacement.
After winning the President's Trophy in 2023/24, the New York Rangers reached their second Eastern Conference Finals in three years, and heading into this season, many believed that this could be their season to take the final step.
In 2024/25, everything seemingly went wrong, with the team moving key pieces, failing to put their young players in positions to succeed and saw many of their veterans struggle, and with Peter Laviolette failing at his job, the belief is that he's going to be moved on this off-season.
Now, before a move has even been made, top NHL Insider Frank Seravalli has identified a potential replacement for Laviolette, and for Rangers fans, it would be the perfect addition.
'I would keep Rick Tocchet toward the top of the Rangers list...I think they'd be really interested in a guy like Rick Tocchet [if he becomes a free agent].'
Rick Tocchet was the head of another disappointing team this season, and with the Canucks and the veteran coach not able to work something out for his future, it appears he could potentially be on the way out as well.
There's also been speculation that Tocchet could be on his way to Philadelphia after the firing of John Tortorella, but with players like Alexis Lafreniere, Igor Shesterkin, Adam Fox, Artemi Panarin and the familiar J.T. Miller, this is the much more attractive destination.
As of right now, we don't know whether Tocchet will be moving on from Vancouver or if there will even be an opening for him in New York, but if both of those things happen, this could be a match made in heaven.
