Nick Sirianni weighs in on Saquon Barkley pulling a future Barry Sanders retirement surprise

Philadelphia Eagles star running back Saquon Barkley recently gave fans a bit of a scare when he discussed his future retirement plans during an appearance on The Green Light Podcast with Chris Long.

On the former Eagles defensive end's podcast, Barkley revealed he'd like to retire the same way Barry Sanders did — suddenly and without any warning.

Nick Sirianni weighs in on Saquon Barkley pulling a future Barry Sanders retirement surprise

“I’ll probably be one of those guys that it’ll be out of nowhere," Barkley said. "I’ll probably just wake up one day, whether it’s next year or two years or four years, and just be like, ‘Yeah it’s over.' I don’t think I will ever lose that passion. I’m just a competitor...

"One of my favorite players of all time, probably my favorite player of all time, is Barry Sanders, so probably similar to that. Maybe one day it will be out of nowhere. I’ll probably be balling and just be like, yeah, and call it quits."

Sanders’ retirement remains one of the most shocking moments in NFL history. At just 31 years old and still performing at an elite level, the Detroit Lions legend stunned the football world by walking away from the game in 1999.

Hopefully, Barkley isn’t ready to call it quits too early.

But if you ask head coach Nick Sirianni, that’s not happening on his watch — at least not in 2025.

"Yeah, I guess anybody could do that, right? I just know he’s got a lot of good football left in him. Again, I have interactions with these guys every single day and I’m excited that he’s on our football team and he’ll be on our football team for the 2025 season and I really don’t let myself get wrapped up into anything else beyond that, except for the day that we’re in and trying to get ready for this practice and obviously handle all those things as they come.

"Yeah, as long as I’m the head coach here, I’d always want to Saquan Barkley on this football team. Obviously it means a lot to this football team and as a player and as a teammate."
