One Eagles player could make or break Super Bowl title defense run in 2025

The Philadelphia Eagles' stellar offense had been anchored by the best offensive line in the NFL over the last decade.

Guys like Lane Johnson, Jason Kelce, Jason Peters, Evan Mathis, and more have been the backbone to what has been a consistently dominant line. Last season was no different with Johnson, Jordan Mailata, Landon Dickerson, and Cam Jurgens all back in 2025.

Mekhi Becton is the only one who has gone after signing with the Los Angeles Chargers during the offseason. That leaves an open position at right guard going into training camp. While it appears to be a position battle, Tyler Steen seems to be the frontrunner for the job. And the Eagles must make sure Steen is the right choice.

Why Steen might be more important than Eagles fans think going into 2025 season

Becton was a massive risk the Eagles took last year in signing him to a one year deal after a rough end to his time with the New York Jets and was widely considered a bust. That's until he went from tackle to guard and transformed his career overnight.

Steen isn't in the same realm as he is a former third round pick of the Eagles in the 2023 NFL Draft. What is similar to Becton is Steen has been asked to move around within the offensive line, playing both tackle and guard. It hasn't been perfect, but he's been solid.

He's played in 28 games, including appearing in all 17 games last year with two starts. His PFF grade might not bring inspiration from the Eagles fans, though, as he finished with a 40.6 grade, ranking 131st out of 136 guards in the NFL in 2024.

So far in OTAs and minicamp, Steen appears to be doing all the right things and hasn't lost the right guard job yet. He's got to compete with free agent signing Matt Pryor, but he is still holding the starting job going into training camp.

Steen's performance at right guard is critical for multiple reasons. The Eagles are starting to see a bit of wear and tear from Mailata and Johnson who both lost time to injury last year. If that becomes a common trend, Steen will be asked to step up in their absence.

Philadelphia has always relied on its offensive line to provide stability for the offense. Steen can't take a step back in that. Otherwise, it could cause a disastrous 2025 season that the Eagles can't afford to have.
