The Las Vegas Raiders have a linebacker room that will provide a handful of opportunities to prove themselves. You can kind of already guess who the starters will be, but nothing is set in stone, really, especially with the depth guys.
They signed former Pittsburgh Steelers linebacker Elandon Roberts, along with former Tampa Bay Buccaneers LB Devin White, former Cincinnati Bengals LB Germaine Pratt, and former Dallas Cowboys LB Jaylon Smith. But, the guys behind them three are really the ones you need to be watching if you are all for position battles. When training camp rolls around, there are going to be some names you will hear a lot of guys that the casual fan definitely doesn't know about.
One of them is Amari Gainer, who played a bit last year as an undrafted free agent but is still trying to climb his way up the depth chart. He's already catching the attention of his new veterans who weren't on the team last season.
"Man, that guy works extremely hard, and he talks a lot. He works extremely hard and he talks a lot, but he will help this team with his energy and his dog mentality," new linebacker Devin White told reporters last week during mandatory minicamp.
Gainer didn't play a whole lot, but when he did, it seemed like he was always making plays. He played a bit of safety growing up, so as a linebacker now, he is pretty good in coverage, all things considered. And that's what the Raiders need the most in that room.
Between the four main guys in the room, none of them can really cover, that is, if we are basing everything on the last version of those players that we saw. So, they will need one of the guys down the depth chart to step up and be that coverage LB. Gainer could be that.
