“Packers Add Former 49ers RB Tyrion Davis-Price Amid Injury Woes — Depth Battle Heats Up in Green Bay Backfield”

The Green Bay Packers have added another recent draft pick to their backfield after the latest injury news with running back Israel Abanikanda at practice.

Tyrion Davis-Price Packers Roster Moves Packers News Israel Abanikanda

According to Sports Illustrated’s Bill Huber, the Packers signed former San Francisco 49ers running back and 2022 third-round pick Tyrion Davis-Price on Tuesday to their 90-man roster. He also practiced at training camp on Tuesday, wearing the No. 44.

Davis-Price — the No. 93 overall pick in 2022 — has appeared in just eight career games over his first three seasons in the league. He received his most playing time as a rookie with the 49ers but struggled with efficiency, averaging 2.9 yards per carry on 34 rushes.

The Packers also held out Abanikanda from Tuesday’s practice with a new hamstring injury that could threaten his chances of sticking around into the 2025 regular season. Abanikanda, a 2023 fifth-round pick, has been vying for a depth role either on the 53-man roster or practice squad since July 26, when the Packers claimed him off waivers.

While Abanikanda has missed just one practice, his hamstring injury is worth watching as the Packers prepare for Saturday’s preseason matchup with the Indianapolis Colts.

Packers Returned Multiple RBs at Tuesday’s Practice

Tyrion Davis-Price’s signing wasn’t the only boost the Packers received on Tuesday.

According to Packers.com’s Weston Hodkiewicz, the Packers also had running backs Emanuel Wilson (knee) and MarShawn Lloyd (groin) return to the practice field for them during the day’s practice. Both participated in individual and team drills.

Lloyd and Wilson are both competing for backup duties behind starter Josh Jacobs for the 2025 season. Lloyd, a 2024 third-round pick, seems the frontrunner after injuries robbed him of the majority of his rookie season, but Wilson rushed for more than 500 yards as the No. 2 option for the Packers in 2024, giving him a solid case of his own.

Chris Brooks is also in contention for a backfield role after averaging 5.1 yards per carry in limited action (55 rushes in 24 games) for the Packers over the past two seasons.

Abanikanda is now the only running back unavailable at practice for the Packers.

Packers ‘Very Comfortable’ With Competition at RB

The Packers are still in the process of trying to determine how they will stack their depth chart at running back behind Jacobs for the 2025 season, but general manager Brian Gutekunst is “very comfortable” with the depth they currently have in place.

“Certainly, with Emanuel Wilson and Chris Brooks, we’ve got two established players who have proven their abilities in this league,” Gutekunst said Tuesday. “We want to get MarShawn out there. Hopefully, I think this week, we’re going to get him out there. That would be nice to see what he can add to the group, but I like the competition there. I like that they have a diverse skill set between all four of them, and I’m very comfortable with that group.”

Based on Gutekunst’s comments about the “four of them,” the Packers seem more likely to keep four running backs on their initial 53-man roster than limit themselves to three. That doesn’t leave much wiggle room for Davis-Price or Abanikanda, but they still have roughly two weeks until the 53-man roster cutdown deadline to make their case.

The Packers must reduce their roster to the 53-man limit by 4 p.m. ET on August 26.
