Rome Odunze had a somewhat underwhelming rookie season for the Chicago Bears, but it was as much related to his circumstances as it was about his own lack of production. The third wide receiver in the class, after Marvin Harrison Jr. and Malik Nabers, he was the ninth overall pick.
Well, our A to Z Sports team made a re-draft, and the situation would be completely different. In this exercise, Malik Nabers, Brian Thomas Jr., Marvin Harrison Jr., and Ladd McConkey were already off the board, but Odunze was still available in the 25th overall selection. And our friend Tyler Forness took him for the Packers.
"Is there any singular position the Packers need more than a number one wide receiver? They have a lot of talent on the outside, but nobody is a game-breaking alpha. Odunze flashed the ability to be that guy with the Bears last season and would be really fun to watch with Jordan Love."
Actually, it would be awesome to see Odunze as a likely WR1 piece. With the Bears, he was behind DJ Moore and Keenan Allen for most of the season. That's why he was only the 12th rookie wide receiver in yards per route run. However, he had an impressive 14.2 average depth of target. Odunze finished
the season with 734 receiving yards and three touchdowns.
Early results
So far, the Packers haven't had significant production from their first-round pick. Offensive lineman Jordan Morgan handled a shoulder injury throughout the entire season, missing the second half of it, after rotating with Sean Rhyan during the first half.
It's early to tell if Morgan will be a good pick or not, but it's only fair to wait and see. Obviously, the re-draft exercise can't wait, and it's fair that Morgan wouldn't have been selected in the first again.
The most questionable missing piece here is Edgerrin Cooper. He was the 45th overall pick in the real draft, but after making the All-Rookie Team even playing as a part-time linebacker, you would expect to see him going in the first round in a re-draft. Welp, that doesn't happen either.
At this point, Cooper and fourth-round pick Evan Williams were the two best returns for the Packers.
