Packers Miss Out on 2 Elite Wide Receivers Day Before Free Agency

The Green Bay Packers are widely expected to make a move for a true No. 1 wide receiver this offseason, either via free agency or a consolidation trade of some type.

However, two of the better options potentially available to the Packers each inked big deals with fellow playoff teams on Sunday, March 9, one day ahead of the official opening of the NFL's free agency negotiating period.

The first deal came between former Packers great Davante Adams, who signed a two-year contract to join QB Matthew Stafford and head coach Sean McVay as a member of the reigning NFC West Division champion Los Angeles Rams.

"Adams signs with the Rams for two years, $46 million and includes $26 million guaranteed," Dianna Russini of The Athletic reported.

The next move, and arguably the bigger splash, came when the Seattle Seahawks agreed to trade two-time Pro Bowl wideout DK Metcalf to the Pittsburgh Steelers in exchange for a second-round pick. The Steelers then signed Metcalf, 27, to a five-year extension worth $150 million.

A deal for Metcalf was an avenue the Packers could have pursued, though Matt Schneidman of The Athletic reported Sunday that it was never a move Green Bay seriously contemplated.

"I'm told the Packers never made an offer to the Seahawks for DK Metcalf, contrary to multiple reports," Schneidman reported via X. "Brian Gutekunst and John Schneider are good friends from their time together in Green Bay, but a deal between the two for Metcalf was never a realistic possibility."

Free agency is just getting into full swing and the Packers still have options to add a receiver that also include potential trades or looking at players in next month's NFL draft.
