Packers say no to early extension talks with trusted offensive contributor as they stay focused on future flexibility

Spotrac projects that Doubs would be worth a four-year, $47.74 million extension—$11.9 million per season. The wide receiver's agent asking for $13.25 million a year isn't absurd, considering that Doubs would reach a new deal a year prior to his unrestricted free agency—and the market only tends to go up with a yearly cap inflation.

Packers say no to early extension talks with trusted offensive contributor as they stay focused on future flexibility

Why the Packers are waiting

Right now, the Packers don't need to pull the trigger, because the team protected itself in the wide receiver position. Jayden Reed and Dontayvion Wicks are under contract through 2026, while Golden and Williams are now signed through 2028.

Even between the two expiring deals, it's hard for the Packers to determine at this point who will get an extension, if anyone. Christian Watson is injured and will likely miss the start of the regular season. However, he brings a unique skill set to the offense and has a higher ceiling.

The last challenging point is that Doubs suffered two concussions throughout the 2024 season. It would be risky to give him a long-term deal before letting him play a full season without new brain injuries.

More likely, the Packers will let the former fourth-round pick play out his rookie contract and reassess the situation next offseason. If Doubs has a career year and proves himself as an important part of the offense, Gutekunst could certainly consider a new deal—and even higher than what Doubs' representatives hinted this year. But there's little reason to rush the decision, and Doubs is not the first option to drive something like that at this point of his career.
