The Green Bay Packers‘ wide receiving corps has the potential to look radically different when the 2025 season kicks off than it did when the season ended last January in Philadelphia.
Heeding running back Josh Jacobs’ call to add a top of the depth chart difference maker, the Packers chose speedster Matthew Golden in the first round of April’s NFL Draft, doubled down by also choosing Savion Williams, and even though Christian Watson is likely sidelined for much of the season, will have a heated competition for jobs this summer.
Is the Clock Ticking on Packers’ Romeo Doubs?
Depending on whether Golden’s elite 4.29 speed shows during training camp this season that it translates to the NFL, Doubs’ days could be numbered as the Packers’ No. 1 receiver or in Green Bay, altogether.
Pro Football Focus’ Nathan Jahnke suggests that Doubs might face heavy competition for targets from quarterback Jordan Love this season.
“The Packers will likely continue to spread out targets among wide receivers,” Jahnke writes for PFF. “As well as tight end Tucker Kraft and running back Josh Jacobs. This could very well be the case this season, making it impossible to start any of the Packers’ wide receivers in fantasy. However, there is also a chance that one or two players start to stand out from everyone else. There is a chance one of those receivers is Doubs, who has improved a little each season and could take a more significant boost. If that happens, Doubs could lead the team in targets and be a reliable fantasy starter.
“However, there is also a chance Doubs loses his starting job and gets lost in the shuffle. He’s been included in trade rumors after his unhappiness with his role last season. Doubs is in the last season of his contract, and the team would save $3.4 million in cap space by releasing him. Doubs has never been a contributor on special teams, so if he falls to fourth or fifth on the depth chart, that could be part of the considerations.”
Doubs’ role, and the Packers’ hierarchy is likely in a state of flux, between Golden’s potential emergence, and expanded roles for the likes of Jayden Reed, Dontayvion Wicks, and others.
Regardless, the Packers’ cometition at wide receiver promises to be among the more fascinating across the NFL during training camps and the preseason this summer.
