A new era is upon the Las Vegas Raiders, one that is defined by expert leadership and experience. General manager John Spytek and head coach Pete Carroll have had no quarrels about moving on from players drafted by the previous regime as they attempt to build the roster the best way they know how.
After several underwhelming seasons, the team waived two former late-round picks earlier in the week, linebacker Amari Burney and defensive tackle Matthew Butler. Despite a lack of depth at both positions, the team felt that these two young players were suited best for another NFL team.
Both players landed on their feet just a day after being released by the Raiders. Burney was claimed by the Tennessee Titans, and Butler was awarded to the Miami Dolphins. This means that the two players will be heading significantly east, but will remain in the AFC with a chance to play their former team on a regular basis.
Burney was not able to crack the linebacker rotation last year under defensive coordinator Patrick Graham. After picking up several veterans at the position, the writing was on the wall.
Butler endured a similar situation, as he was unable to wedge his way into the lineup. Younger players drafted by the current regime entered the fold this offseason, which made him immediately expendable.
Neither player is a catastrophic loss for the Silver and Black. However, it is nice to know that the team has enough talent that they are parting ways with roster-worthy players.
