Patrick Mahomes can breathe easy. After the problems with his defensive line that led them to be humiliated by the Philadelphia Eagles in Super Bowl LIX, the Kansas City Chiefs hired an elite reinforcement to cover the backs of their star signal-caller.
It is no secret that the Chiefs' offensive line was one of the worst in the NFL in 2024. The unit led by Andy Heck allowed 36 sacks to Mahomes for a loss of 239 yards, and their coverage of the running backs was not the best either. Kansas City's ground attack was the third worst in the league, with just four yards per carry.
But the straw that broke the camel's back was their performance in Super Bowl LIX. The Eagles' defense repeatedly penetrated the Chiefs' offensive line, sacking Mahomes six times. To remedy that, Kansas City brought in five-year veteran Jaylon Moore.
The Chiefs snatched a budding star from the Niners
According to NFL Network insider Mike Garafolo, the Chiefs extended Moore to a two-year, $30 million contract. Moore was coming off his rookie contract with the San Francisco 49ers, where he played a crucial role as a backup to Trent Williams, guarding quarterback Brock Purdy.
Moore played in 16 games in the 2024 season, two of them as a starter. On December 25, the team placed him on injured reserve with a quadriceps injury that kept him from playing the final two games of the regular season.
What's next for the Chiefs?
Moore was one of the top left tackle prospects in free agency, along with Cam Robinson, Tyron Smith, and Morgan Moses. With Moore on their roster, the Chiefs could use their first pick in the 2025 NFL Draft to fill other priorities.
Some analysts believe head coach Andy Reid could go with a pass rusher as his first college pick in 2025. However, he also needs to shore up the defensive line, and Xavier Worthy's recent struggles could open up a spot in the receiver room.
With free agency officially beginning March 12 and the draft six weeks away, the Chiefs' 2025 roster picture is becoming clearer. But will it be enough to play in their fourth consecutive Super Bowl? Only time will tell.
