Patrick Mahomes’ Dad Apologizes for ‘Most Embarrassing’ Mistake

With another training camp in the books, Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes is ready to make his first start of the 2025 preseason against the Arizona Cardinals on Saturday, August 9.

Mahomes is unlikely to play more than a few snaps, however, Mahomes is excited to get out there to start the new season, officially putting the team’s Super Bowl LIX blowout loss behind him. Fans, however, will relive last season’s journey when ESPN’s “The Kingdom” premieres on August 14.

The six-part docuseries follows the franchise’s historic run to their fourth Super Bowl appearance in six seasons. The series includes a look back at Kansas City’s 25-22 overtime win over the San Francisco 49ers in the 2024 Super Bowl, as well as the quarterback’s personal drama leading up to the big game.

A week before the Super Bowl LVIII, Mahomes’ father, Pat Mahomes Sr., was arrested on suspicion of “driving while intoxicated.”

Speaking to reporters in Las Vegas at the time, Mahomes addressed his father’s arrest.

“He’s doing good,” Mahomes said. “I don’t really want to get into it too much, but he’s doing good for whatever the situation is… It’s a family matter. I’ll just keep it to the family, and that’s all I really have to say at this point.” Pat, who was released on a $10,000 bond, ultimately made it to Allegiant Stadium for the big game.

In “The Kingdom,” Mahomes, his wife, Brittany Mahomes, and his dad open up the pre-Super Bowl arrest for the first time, per the New York Post.

Pat, a former MLB pitcher, has a history of multiple DUIs. However, the timing of his latest incident served as a wake-up call. Mahomes said, “I think just knowing that it hurt me, woke him up to know that like you can’t keep doing the same things.”

Pat shares a similar sentiment. “It kind of hit home before the Super Bowl last year, when I got in trouble. For him to have to answer questions about me, you know, was probably the most embarrassing thing that I’ve ever been through in my life,” he said.

“I called him right after… I said, ‘I’m sorry, I’m sorry that it’s taken away from your time and focus.’… I made a vow that he would never have to deal with anything because of drinking because of me. I haven’t had a drink since then.”

Brittany shared that their kids helped serve as inspiration for Pat’s recovery, as well. “I think it finally hit him that, you know, ‘I have my kids watching me, I have my grandkids now that are watching me,’” she said. “He really enjoys watching his son play football and live out his dream.”
