Patrick Mahomes Earns Unusual MVP Buzz After Blowout Chiefs Loss

The Kansas City Chiefs went into Sunday's season finale with nothing on the line and a chance to rest their starters.

Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes (15) prior to the NFL Week 18 matchup against the Denver Broncos on Sunday, January 5, 2025 in Denver, CO.

The team suffered just its second loss of the season in a 38-0 blowout to the rival Denver Broncos, but may have earned something unexpected in the process -- a case for quarterback Patrick Mahomes to earn MVP.

The Chiefs struggled to move the ball behind veteran backup Carson Wentz, failing to crack 100 total yards on offense and holding the ball for just 18:11 to Denver's 41:49. Wentz completed 10 of 17 passes for 98 yards.

After the game, some pundits made the case that the dismal performance shows how Mahomes deserves some consideration for MVP.

"So, we all agree that Mahomes is the MVP now, right?" wrote Nick Wright of Fox Sports in a post on X.

Others agreed that if the MVP award is truly for the most valuable player to their team, Mahomes should take home the award.

"Mahomes sits out one game & the #Chiefs are down 31-0 in the 3rd quarter. He is the league MVP," a fan wrote on X.

"Chiefs without Mahomes=Worst team I’ve ever seen," another wrote on X. "Give the man MVP"

Mahomes went into the game nursing an injured ankle and will have two full weeks to heal, with the Chiefs earning the No. 1 overall seed and a bye week, not taking the field again until the divisional round of the NFL playoffs.
