Patrick Mahomes' Former Offensive Coordinator Eyeing NFL Comeback

The best years of Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes’ career came while working under Eric Bieniemy.

From 2018 to 2022, Bieniemy was Kansas City’s offensive coordinator, and Mahomes won two Super Bowls, two Super Bowl MVPs, two regular season MVPs, and one Offensive Player of the Year award, while being named to five Pro Bowls and earning three All-Pro selections.

He also had two 5,000-yard passing seasons, four seasons with 37 or more touchdowns, and four seasons with a passer rating of 105 or better, so surely given his track record of working with arguably the top passer in the NFL, Bieniemy shouldn’t have too hard of a time finding another employer.

After one season in the college ranks, Bieniemy is reportedly eyeing an NFL comeback according to Fox Sports’ Jordan Schultz.

“Veteran NFL OC Eric Bieniemy has spoken with multiple NFL teams and also interviewed for the #Patriots’ OC job before it went to Josh McDaniels, according to league sources,” Schultz wrote. “The belief was that Bieniemy was a top candidate for the New England job, had McDaniels not been the obvious choice. Talks with other teams are ongoing.”

Since Bieniemy left Kansas City — he was the Washington Commanders offensive coordinator in 2023 and UCLA’s OC in 2024 — Mahomes’ production has taken a bit of a hit.

The 29-year-old QB went from averaging 4,791 yards and 38 touchdowns per season under Bieniemy to 4,055 yards and 26.5 touchdowns per season with 25 combined interceptions under Matt Nagy.

The Chiefs offense ranked in the top six in total offense and scoring offense every year under Bieniemy, including three of those years ranked No. 1 in yards per game and two years ranked first in points per game.

There are five current offensive coordinator jobs open — the Dallas Cowboys, Houston Texans, Las Vegas Raiders, New Orleans Saints, and Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Bieniemy could be in play for all of them.
