Patrick Mahomes' Former Trainer Makes 'Cool' Admission About Chiefs QB

Kansas City Chiefs star Patrick Mahomes has become one of the greatest quarterbacks in NFL history, and now, the man who helped shape his early career is sharing what it felt like to be part of that journey.

Quincy Avery, a well-known quarterback trainer who has worked with top names like Jalen Hurts and C.J. Stroud, recently reflected on his time training Mahomes.

In an interview with PEOPLE ahead of the April 23 release of his Hulu documentary, “The Quincy Avery Effect,” Avery said working with Mahomes was a special experience.

“To be able to say you worked at one point with the best quarterback in the world, it’s really cool,” Avery said.

Avery reportedly met Mahomes during the 2017 offseason, before the NFL Draft. At that time, Mahomes was coming off a record-breaking season at Texas Tech, which included an NCAA single-game record of 819 total yards against Oklahoma.

Even with those impressive stats, Mahomes wasn’t picked until No. 10 overall in the draft. The Chiefs selected him after nine other teams passed on him, including the Chicago Bears, who chose Mitch Trubisky at No. 2.

According to Avery, Mahomes had natural talent, but he wasn’t fully polished yet.

“He wasn’t as refined back then as he is now,” Avery explained. “But having the chance to work with him then and seeing how far he’s come, it’s really amazing.”

Mahomes has since earned three Super Bowl titles, three Super Bowl MVP awards and two league MVPs.

Though Avery and Mahomes are no longer close, they still keep in touch occasionally.

“I’ll DM Mahomes every now and then and we’ll exchange a laugh,” Avery shared.

As for Mahomes, he’s already preparing for the 2025 season. He recently hosted his annual throwing camp in Dallas, Texas, joined by several teammates and quarterbacks.

Videos from the camp show Mahomes working alongside players like Marquise "Hollywood" Brown and Skyy Moore.

“Back at it,” Mahomes captioned an Instagram post.

With training camps starting soon and the 2025 NFL Draft just weeks away, Mahomes remains focused — and those who knew him before the fame, like Quincy Avery, are proud to have been part of his story.
