Patrick Mahomes has become a star of the NFL and the world - but who's proud of him? Taylor Swift

Since entering the NFL, Patrick Mahomes has turned into a true superstar. Well, technically starting in his second year, since he spent his rookie season behind Alex Smith. But once he took over as the starter, the Texas Tech quarterback has been nothing short of phenomenal.

Mahomes has won the Super Bowl three times, lost it twice, and has been named NFL MVP twice. For many, he is currently the best quarterback in the league. Even Taylor Swift enjoys watching him play every weekend. But there are others who have played a role in Mahomes' success and take pride in his journey.

Quarterback coach Quincy Avery once worked with Mahomes and today is one of the proudest to see how far he's come - especially considering how underestimated he was before the 2017 NFL Draft.

"Being able to say you worked with the best quarterback in the world at some point is really cool," Avery told PEOPLE, noting that Mahomes' legacy - with three Super Bowl rings - is practically undeniable.

Avery trained with Mahomes during a pre-draft camp in 2017. At the time, Mahomes was a standout at Texas Tech, having led the NCAA in passing yards in 2016. Even so, Mitch Trubisky was drafted before him.

According to Avery, even if Mahomes wasn't stealing the spotlight back then like other prospects, he still showed flashes of greatness - flashes that have since manifested in his career through his Super Bowl wins, records, and MVP awards.

"Getting to see him back then and seeing what he's become has been truly amazing. I still DM him now and then - we'll share a laugh or talk about random stuff," Avery added in his interview with PEOPLE.

Avery has also worked with other quarterbacks such as Jalen Hurts, current Super Bowl winner, as well as C.J. Stroud, Jordan Love, and Deshaun Watson.
