Patrick Mahomes Has Big Plans for His $450 Million Salary

When Patrick Mahomes retires, there's one way he could stay very involved with the Kansas City Chiefs. He's open to this idea, too.

If there’s any quarterback in the NFL who is expected to be totally loyal to his franchise, it’s Patrick Mahomes of the Kansas City Chiefs. Mahomes, of course, has won multiple titles for the Chiefs and is simply one of the best quarterbacks of his generation and all time, which is why the Chiefs have him signed to stay with the team through 2031. As they say, the Chiefs put a ring on it.

But, someday down the road, Mahomes, of course, will have to retire from the NFL. He’s still young, so that’s not going to happen now, but it will happen.

When Mahomes does retire, there’s one way he could stay very involved with the Kansas City Chiefs. He sounds like he wants to make this happen, too.

Patrick Mahomes Shows His Chiefs Pride

Mahomes has made it very clear just how much he loves the Chiefs. The team is such a part of him, the Mahomes says he would one day like to be a part owner in the Kansas City Chiefs. His contract is for $450 million, so he would certainly have enough to finance this dream.

It would really be incredible for Mahomes to own part of the team that has been such a big part of his life for so long. According to what Mahomes told CNBC’s Alex Sherman in a July 10 interview, he would like for that to happen, at the very least by owning a minority stake in the Chiefs.

When asked about the more and more former NFL players buying minority stakes and if he would have interest when he retires, Mahomes was totally positive about the idea. It makes sense, since Mahomes is already big into sports investments and has ownership stakes in the Kansas City Royals, Sporting KC and the Kansas City Current.

“Kansas City and the Chiefs have done so much for me, so to be a part of them in any way would be really cool,” Mahomes said during the chat. “I know they do the minority stakes and stuff like that now. I don’t think the Chiefs have done that yet, so maybe down the line.”

Of course, Mahomes wouldn’t be the first to be a part-owner in a team. NFL owners approved Tom Brady’s request to become a limited partner of the Las Vegas Raiders, so he’s kind of paved the way for others to do the same.

Hurdles to Patrick Mahomes’ Ownership Goal

But, as Mahomes noted, the Chiefs haven’t sold any minority stakes in the Chiefs so far. The Hunt family seems to like to have full ownership over it. So, adding Mahomes would likely mean getting approval from both the Hunt family and NFL.

In the interview, Mahomes emphasized that this would all happen much further down the road, stating, “That’ll be about 10 or 15 years from now, or whatever that is. Hopefully they’ll hold the space for me because you only have a certain amount of minority stakes that they can sell.”

Mahomes turns 30 on September 17, so yes, retirement is still a ways away for him. But, he mentioned “10 or 15 years,” which implies that he could be doing an Aaron Rodgers or Tom Brady and staying in the league until he’s 45, which would be interesting.
