Sports never takes a day off.
As Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs are in the thick of it preparing for a Super Bowl rematch and a chance to three-peat vs. the Philadelphia Eagles, the NBA was just the host of one of the most shocking trades in recent memory.
The trade, of course, involved the Dallas Mavericks sending star Luka Doncic and several other players to the Los Angeles Lakers, with the Mavericks receiving a first-round pick, Anthony Davis and others in a three-team trade.
Seeing the Mavericks move on from Doncic, the face of the franchise in recent years, sent shockwaves through the sports world. As did the Lakers trading away Davis, who has been the Robin to LeBron James' Batman.
Everyone in the sports world had an opinion on the shocking trade, including Chiefs star quarterback and diehard Mavericks fan Patrick Mahomes.
Mahomes reacted to the trade on social media, expressing plenty of shock and awe at the move while also having optimism on what it could mean for the Mavericks and their chances of competing for an NBA title moving forward.
The move by the Mavericks will certainly have an impact on the short- and long-term future of Mahomes' favorite NBA franchise, a team which he often watches from courtside seats.
"The Mavericks approached the Lakers recently and offered Luka Doncic, sources tell ESPN. Lakers brass met and believed the 25-year-old Doncic has the ability to be the face of their franchise for the next decade while giving Anthony Davis a win-now move in Dallas," ESPN's Shams Charania said.
Mahomes is clearly in shock over the move, but he will have to move on quickly as he prepares for the Super Bowl bout vs. the Eagles. Still, his reaction shows that even the most important player in the NFL who is in the middle of one of the most important weeks of his career is still, at heart, a sports fan.
We will see how this trade ages over the next several weeks, but Mahomes is just like everyone else when it comes to the trade: in shock.
