Peyton Manning shares what ‘doesn’t seem right’ about Sam Darnold and the Minnesota Vikings

Few could have predicted that he would lead them to a 14-3 record, finishing second in the NFC North behind the Detroit Lions.

It poses a question over the future of the Vikings’ 2024 first-round draft pick JJ McCarthy who will return from injury ahead of next season.

Darnold is due a big contract after the playoffs and is set to be a free agent again. It’s unknown whether the organisation would like to retain him yet.

A former New York Jets GM said McCarthy’s trade potential is sky-high and any move would open for door for Darnold to receive his extension.

Star receiver Justin Jefferson likes that Darnold is a leader for the Vikings and their partnership has been a big reason for their success this season.

Darnold faces the Los Angeles Rams this weekend in a bid to end a five-year winless streak in the NFL playoffs.

The Rams are one of the three teams who beat them this season in a surprising 30-20 win back in October.

A late controversial play which saw Darnold subjected to a non-called facemask penalty cost them the game, which may have turned out differently otherwise.

Speaking to ESPN, ex-NFL star Peyton Manning praised Darnold’s performance throughout the 2024 season.

“It has been fun to see his success. He has played outstanding football. I was watching some film this week. He has made some big-time throws in critical situations,” he said.

“It’s hard to believe that you’re 14-3 and you have to go on the road [in the playoffs]. Something doesn’t seem right about that. It has been fun to watch.”

Whatever happens in the playoffs, Darnold has finally found himself a home in the NFL after years of suffering with the Jets, Carolina Panthers and San Francisco 49ers.

He may even take a discount compared to what other teams may offer him in order to do so, but it’s going to be a heavy decision for the franchise regardless.

They either leave behind their MVP calibre quarterback and let him sign for a rival, or they let down their first-round draft pick who hasn’t even received an opportunity to play.

Shannon Sharpe doesn’t think the Vikings should resign Darnold even though he has led them to the post-season in his first year with the team.

In an offensive and quarterback-needy league, he’s likely to be the top free agent ahead of 2025 so will have plenty of offers, but having to reset again may be against his wishes.
