The Philadelphia Eagles are making a sign roster move coming off their Bye Week. The 2-2 Eagles are third in the NFC East entering their Week 6 matchup with the Cleveland Browns.
The Eagles were off in Week 5 following a crushing defeat to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The Eagles looked lost in a 33-16 blowout to the team that knocked them out of the playoffs in the Wild Card round in January.
The Philadelphia Eagles cut a former first-round pick
On Tuesday, the Eagles chose to move on from a player who played a large role in the Buccaneers’ Super Bowl LV win.
Per a statement by the Eagles, the team released linebacker Devin White.
Devin White has been a successful NFL player
The Buccaneers selected White with the No. 5 pick in the 2019 NFL Draft. He was an All-Pro for the 2020 season and made a Pro Bowl appearance during the 2021 season.
White was a full-time starter in all five of his seasons with Tampa Bay. He recorded 566 tackles, 40 tackles for loss, 23 sacks, six forced fumbles, and three interceptions.
In March, the Eagles signed White to a one-year deal worth $7.5 million. The LSU standout’s time with the Eagles was not successful. He recorded no stats with Philadelphia.
A mutual parting
Per Mike Garafolo with the NFL Network, White will receive $3.5 million of the $7.5 he signed for. Garafolo suggested it was a mutual parting.
“Devin White’s one-year deal with the Eagles will pay him $3.5 million,” Garafolo posted on X. “It obviously wasn’t a good fit and, with White being inactive for the first four games, a split at this point was considered best for both sides.”
It’s curious why the Eagles chose to sign White in free agency if he didn’t fit their system. First-year defensive coordinator Vic Fangio should have known what type of player White was before the front office pulled the trigger on the talented defender.
