Potential Home Run Hitter Planning to Join Broncos QB Bo Nix

The Denver Broncos need more from their group around Bo Nix, just as much as they need the second-year quarterback to take a step forward, including their running back room, where third-year man Jaleel McLaughlin is looking to make an impact.

A favorite of the Broncos coaching staff, McLaughin saw increased usage in 2024 compared to his rookie season, but faces a new set of challenges.

Even before those came up, though, McLaughlin planned to be better for Nix and the Broncos.

According to the Denver Post’s Parker Gabriel, McLaughlin’s “only” plans are to work out on his own and get together with Nix and several other teammates this summer, as the QB has organized a group workout.

“I’m getting straight to work for sure,” McLaughlin told Gabriel, in comments published on June 16. “I’m not taking no downtime.”

According to Gabriel, McLaughlin’s 2024 season was a “mixed bag” in terms of production. However, the former undrafted free agent has one aspect that he said particularly left him displeased with his second Broncos campaign.

Gabriel noted McLaughlin’s issue, “turning singles and doubles into home runs,” was one that the entire Broncos backfield shared.

McLaughlin, though, has taken it to heart.

“Really just turning those 12-yard plays into 80 and 90 or 50 and 60-yard touchdowns. That’s what I’ve been trying to work on,” McLaughlin said,” per Gabriel. “It’s that small. If you juggle a ball — especially because everybody in the league is good and plays fast and real smart — that can definitely change a game. If I don’t catch the ball clean, if I take one false step. I’ve been working on the little things for sure.”

McLaughlin’s longest play from scrimmage was a 21-yard scamper in a 33-10 Broncos win against the New Orleans Saints. Tyler Badie had the Broncos’ longest run at 43 yards with Nix, who led the team in rushing for several weeks to start the season, second at 32 yards.

McLaughlin has seen his competition for snaps increase, with the Broncos signing J.K. Dobbins in free agency after drafting RJ Harvey in the second round of the 2025 draft. They also have 2024 fifth-round pick Audric Estime and fellow second-year back Blake Watson.

Broncos head coach Sean Payton has said the entire group will receive opportunities in training camp and, presumably, the preseason, naming Estime and McLaughlin, in particular.

“I’m looking forward to seeing how they play, and they’re going to get opportunities,” Payton told reporters on June 10, warning not to tally reps during mandatory minicamp. “Audric’s going to get opportunities.’ All right? We’ve seen Jaleel, but don’t try to figure out the club right now. It’s way too early.”

McLaughlin praised Harvey as a hard-working, “very smart,” and a “great football player.”

Dobbins has an extensive injury history. So, even if he starts, the Broncos will likely mix at least one other back into the rotation. Harvey has impressed and could have a leg up. McLaughlin’s versatility and experience with the Broncos coaching staff could similarly benefit him.
