The Las Vegas Raiders have been fairly active this offseason under first-time general manager John Spytek. While the free agency period has been a bit quiet for the Silver and Black, the new regime made a major trade for quarterback Geno Smith and re-signed or extended several of their best players in the weeks before the legal tampering period began.
Despite a historic rookie season from tight end Brock Bowers and a career year from wide receiver Jakobi Meyers, the team is still in the market for a true No. 1 wide receiver this offseason. On Wednesday, The Athletic's Tashan Reed reported that the Raiders have interest in signing veteran wideout Cooper Kupp to fill this role.
Kupp was released by the Los Angeles Rams on Wednesday at the start of the league year after spending his entire eight-year career with the team. In 2021, he had a monumental season, leading the entire NFL in receptions, receiving yards and receiving touchdowns, and he capped off the year by winning the Super Bowl MVP Trophy.
While his production has dropped off in recent seasons, mainly due to injury, Kupp still has plenty to offer an NFL offense. The Rams recently signed Davante Adams to pair with Puka Nacua, which left Kupp as the odd man out in Los Angeles.
Raiders offensive coordinator Chip Kelly could certainly utilize Kupp's talents in his offense, and depending on the price, it may be a great move for the franchise. There are several solid options in the draft, as well as other veterans available like Stefon Diggs, but Kupp may be the best wide receiver on the market and Las Vegas is smart to entertain the idea.
