Rangers’ Pending Free Agent Linked to Trade, Offer Sheet Possibilities

New York Rangers defenseman K'Andre Miller's name continues to circulate as one of the more intriguing restricted free agents entering the NHL offseason.

Rangers’ Pending Free Agent Linked to Trade, Offer Sheet Possibilities

With Miller's current deal set to expire on July 1 and the Rangers facing cap constraints and trying to retool their roster, league interest in the 25-year-old defenseman has intensified.

Cam Robinson reported on Saturday that Miller was "consistently swirling around" in conversations at the NHL draft combine leading up to the weekend.

According to Robinson, the Rangers have indicated to teams that Miller is available for trade, but there is also active consideration from clubs about the possibility of submitting an offer sheet.

"It appears the Rangers have alerted teams that (Miller) is available in a trade, but clubs are also considering the Offer Sheet route as Miller will become a Restricted Free Agent on July 1st," Robinson wrote. "Sources indicate that the Rangers aren’t going to deal him for a song and have a contingency plan to match any reasonable Offer Sheet through clearing cap in other (ways).

"That said, there seems to be a healthy market for the 25-year-old left-shot defender."

This follows a previous report from Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman, who stated that the Rangers are willing to explore what the market is for Miller.

"They are testing the market on Miller. They want to know what it is," Friedman said. "His name is definitely out there."

Friedman confirmed the team is open to trading the former first-round pick as General Manager Chris Drury explores reshaping the roster.

Miller, selected with the No. 22 overall in the 2018 NHL draft, posted 27 points in 74 games this season after having a career year in 2023, scoring 43 points in 79 games.

According to PuckPedia, a qualifying offer for Miller stands at $4.6 million. The Rangers, who only have $8.4 million in cap space, may struggle to retain Miller while adding new players to improve the roster this offseason.
