The New York Rangers missed the postseason entirely last year, and the front office has spent this offseason working to change that fact. New York brought in head coach Mike Sullivan to lead the team forward, and the organization feels confident in the future.
But the Rangers may be looking ahead to next offseason when Edmonton Oilers star Connor McDavid could be available. McDavid is entering the final year of his deal in Edmonton, and there has been some thought that he could leave the team.
NHL writer Adam Gretz of Bleacher Report put together a list of landing spots for McDavid if he were to become a free agent. The Rangers were mentioned, and the fit does make a lot of sense.
"The NHL would love to see its biggest star playing in its biggest market, and the Rangers would undoubtedly love to have a franchise-changing player at the top of their lineup. It would go a long way to kick-start excitement in Manhattan, especially after everything went so far off the rails during the 2024-25 season," Gretz wrote.
If the Rangers were to land McDavid, it would be a massive addition to one of the biggest franchises in the NHL. McDavid would fit in very well with the Rangers, and he would be able to help lead this team forward.
New York will have some real money coming off the books next offseason, just in time for McDavid's free agency. The Rangers would be one of the favorites to land McDavid if he were to leave the Oilers due to the market size of the team.
McDavid would have plenty of suitors for his services and could command a ridiculous amount of money. New York would be a very solid option, but it remains to be seen how the McDavid situation will play out moving forward.
