Ravens' Marlon Humphrey takes a sly jab at Patrick Mahomes with backhanded compliment

Ravens

Marlon Humphrey praised and tried to roast Patrick Mahomes at the same time as he made some comments about the Chiefs quarterback on his Punch Line Podcast. He admitted the obvious by saying that the reigning consecutive Super Bowl MVP is amazing but added the caveat that one doesn't expect him to be so.

Marlon Humphrey said that a lot of the inventive plays that go against the playbook work for Patrick Mahomes, but sometimes they don't. But because they do work most of the time, it hides any potential weaknesses.

The defender compared Mahomes to those "chubby" kids who one doesn't expect to be fast but catch the opposition by surprise. The Ravens corner noted:

"What makes him very good is he just does - he really does some pretty wild stuff that sometimes catches him, but a lot of times doesn’t, He’s like a chubby fast dude. I’m always amazed when he’s just out-running people or just juking people in the backfield, getting out of a sack and just launching the ball."

Marlon Humphrey's continued respect for Patrick Mahomes

Marlon Humphrey might not have found the best choice of words to describe Patrick Mahomes' greatness, but there's no doubt that the Baltimore defensive back has tremendous respect for the Chiefs' quarterback.

Before their meeting in the AFC championship game, which the Ravens lost, Marlon Humphrey had said something prophetic about Kansas City, calling them the team to beat. He had said then:

"I feel like the Chiefs... every year in, year out, they might be like, 'Oh they're not looking that good. They're not this.' They're still 'that team.' They're still the team to beat.
"Whether they're losing, [or] whether they're winning, they're still the Chiefs, and they're the team to beat. They're Super Bowl champs, and for us to beat them, it's going to take everybody firing on all cylinders."

Marlon Humphrey had even compared Patrick Mahomes to his own quarterback, Lamar Jackson, who was widely tipped to win then the MVP award that he eventually did, even though the Chiefs quarterback wasn't as good in 2023. The defender had noted before the AFC Championship game.

"Mahomes, I think him and Lamar (Jackson). ... It's those two quarterbacks and then everybody else."

Now, Marlon Humphrey was again on the losing side as the Chiefs beat the Ravens to open their 2024 NFL season. It's , therefore, highly unlikely that he was aiming any trash talk toward Patrick Mahomes and two consecutive losses against Kansas City.
