Report: Steelers hiring Cowboys LB coach Scott McCurley

The Pittsburgh Steelers are hiring Scott McCurley as their inside linebackers coach, per Gerry Dulac. He will replace Aaron Curry, who left the organization this offseason and joined the New York Jets.

Report: Steelers hiring Cowboys LB coach Scott McCurley

McCurley has spent the past five seasons as the Dallas Cowboys’ linebackers coach. During that time, he has been instrumental in mentoring standouts such as Eric Kendricks, who racked up a team-high 138 tackles this past season.

It’s a homecoming for McCurley, who went to Mohawk High School in Bessemer, Pennsylvania and played at Pittsburgh in college. McCurley played linebacker for the Panthers and remained with the team after his graduation as a defensive graduate assistant.

McCurley’s first position in the NFL ranks was as a coaching administrator intern for the Green Bay Packers in 2006. He worked his way up the Packers’ coaching ladder until he was named a defensive assistant in 2018.

He joined the Cowboys in 2020 and has been with the organization since. Now, he will look to make an impact in his home state. He certainly has excellent pieces to work with on his new team.

The Steelers’ defense allowed 326.7 yards per game in the 2024-25 campaign, ranking No. 12 in the NFL. With standouts like Patrick Queen and Payton Wilson anchoring Pittsburgh’s linebackers unit, Scott McCurley will have no shortage of talent at his disposal.

NFL insiders weighs in on Steelers’ QB plan

The Pittsburgh Steelers have an organization-defining decision to make with its quarterback room this offseason.

With both of last season’s starting QBs — 36-year-old Russell Wilson and 25-year-old Justin Fields — currently free agents following a roller-coaster first season in Pittsburgh, the Steelers are weighing their options about which could potentially return in 2025.

ESPN insider Jeremy Fowler revealed where the Steelers’ front office currently stands in that decision-making process on Friday afternoon’s SportsCenter.

“I do know there’s some sentiment in the building for bringing back Justin Fields and that both sides – Fields and the Steelers – are open to a potential reunion,” Fowler said Friday. “Fields wants a realistic shot to start. He wants a clear path to be the guy the whole season, which he was not last year.

“But this is a supply and demand issue. Because you have five teams picking in the Top 10 of the draft and they all can’t get (a quarterback), there are only so many free agent quarterbacks, so Fields will have some options elsewhere.”
