ABC has officially renewed Dancing With the Stars for its 34th season and revealed its very first celebrity contestant: Robert Irwin. The 21-year-old wildlife conservationist, best known as the son of the late “Crocodile Hunter” Steve Irwin, is stepping into the ballroom for the first time.

Following in the footsteps of his famous family, Robert has become a familiar face in conservation, working closely with his mother, Terri Irwin, and his sister, Bindi Irwin, at the Australia Zoo. The Irwins have long been dedicated to continuing Steve’s legacy, following his tragic death in 2006 after a stingray accident.

Fans of the show will likely remember Bindi Irwin’s own successful stint on DWTS. She competed in season 21 and won the Mirrorball Trophy alongside pro dancer Derek Hough in 2015. Her performances were deeply emotional and often served as tributes to her late father. “I’m trying to carry on my dad’s legacy, and it is tough,” Bindi told Us Weekly at the time. “But the sun will shine again.”

Robert was a regular presence in the audience during Bindi’s season, cheering her on with their mother. Derek Hough recalled the Irwin family fondly, saying, “Her brother is just as incredible as she is. They’re such a kind, inspiring family.”

As for the most recent champion, The Bachelor star Joey Graziadei took home the Mirrorball in season 33 alongside pro partner Jenna Johnson in November 2024. In his acceptance speech, Graziadei praised Jenna, saying, “This is all for her. She deserves this.”

At this time, Robert Irwin remains the only officially announced contestant for season 34. ABC is expected to reveal the full cast and the list of professional dancers in the coming months.
