Sam Ehlinger joined the Denver Broncos on a one-year deal earlier this week. While the terms were not disclosed, he is expected to serve as the third-string quarterback behind Bo Nix and Jarrett Stidham following the departure of Zach Wilson.
Ehlinger spent the first four seasons of his career with the Indianapolis Colts after the franchise selected him in the sixth round of the 2021 NFL Draft. His agent, Erik Burkhardt, revealed that a return to the Colts was on the table, along with other opportunities, however, his client decided to join the Broncos.
Chris Tomasson of the Denver Gazette shared Burkhardt's comments, tweeting:
Agent Erik Burkhardt on Sam Ehlinger joins #Broncos "The opportunity to work with Coach [Sean] Payton & Davis Webb & be in that room w/Bo & Stidham is extremely appelaing. This will make him better & he'll get an opportunity to continue to develop under some of the best offensive minds"
Agent Erik Burkhardt on quarterback Sam Ehlinger joining #Broncos after four years with Colts: "He had other opportunities and Indy wanted him back because they know what he brings, but this situation (in Denver) stood out to him."

Ehlinger appeared in just eight games for the Colts, making three starts - none of which his team won. He threw for 573 yards, three touchdowns, and three interceptions while completing 63.4% of his pass attempts. The 26-year-old added 96 rushing yards on 20 carries.
After a largely successful collegiate career with the Texas Longhorns, Ehlinger will look to revitalize his NFL career with Denver. Barring injury, he will likely spend much of the year inactive, as Nix was the only Broncos quarterback to attempt a pass last season.
